Advice Column: Pregnancy, Divorce, and Gifts

“I think I’m pregnant. I’m only 15. How do I tell my boyfriend?”

First of all, hold your horses. What are you basing the assumption that you are pregnant on? Are you getting morning sickness? Headaches? Is your period late? All of those things can simply be stress. And if you’re worried about being pregnant, you will obviously be a bit stressed out. Buy a pregnancy test as soon as possible. Read the instructions carefully before using the test. In fact, to be completely sure, buy 2 or 3 tests – they can be wrong.

If the test shows positive, it’s time to tell your boyfriend that you are pregnant. It is a hard but necessary task to undertake. Sit down with him and say that you have something important to tell him. Be sure that he is paying attention before breaking the news to him. Hopefully, he will react responsibly and you can discuss the next step that the two of you are to take.

“My parents are getting a divorce and I feel like it’s my fault.”

It is not your fault. People fall apart, it happens. It will be a tough transition period as you and your parents sort out all the messy decisions and paperwork. But do not blame your parents’ divorce on yourself. If two people are unhappy together and cannot settle their differences, sometimes divorce is the best option for all parties. Both of your parents are likely to end up being happier when it’s all over with. So remember that you are not responsible and keep in mind that just because your parents are separated does not mean that your relationship with one or both of them has to fall apart.

“What should I give girlfriend for our 1st,3rd,6th, etc month anniversary?”

One good thing to always keep in mind about gifts is that they are always sweeter when they come from the heart. Sure, a box of chocolates is nice, but I bet that set of candles she mentioned a while back would really show her you care. Think back on the things you’ve heard her talk about. Did she mention something she saw in a particular store, or something she said she was interested in in passing? A gift is much more meaningful if it shows her that you were paying attention when she casually mentioned that little trinket a few weeks back.
