‘Little Bugger’ Plant

November 3

I came in to work this morning to find this little bugger on my desk:

The little plant Joseph gave me

A gift from Joseph, our lead designer, for watering his plant while he’s been away for the past couple of months. This little plant is literally shorter than my palm! And I’ve got small hands.

The note that came with the plant

Isn’t it cute?! It now sits next to my other office plant. It needs a name – in fact, maybe I’ll call him ‘Little Bugger’.

Thanks, Joseph :)

Oh and thanks to Boris for taking the pictures and sending them to me.

So a weird creature was found washed up on a beach new New York. Poor baby :( It looks a bit like a turtle without a shell to me.

Apples and the Big Bang

May 4

HHRay and I were just watching a documentary about the six billion dollar experiment in which they will try to recreate the Big Bang. I’m not Christian or religious, but I am spiritual. Nothing that I believe goes against science and what it proves or disproves, so while I’m biased toward spirituality, I am not specifically biased against science and scientific discovery. But really, HHRay was talking about it as if it’ll prove how the universe started, that the Big Bang was real.

I don’t see how. I mean…let’s take an apple for example. Let’s say you stumble across a fallen apple under an apple tree. How do we know that the apple dropped off the branch as opposed to being dropped by a person sitting in that apple tree and releasing it from his hand? Sure, we can go and observe an apple falling without human interference now, but that doesn’t mean that that particular apple fell that way! For all we know there might have been someone in that tree. Recreating the apple falling on its own doesn’t prove that this is what happened to the previous apple we found.

I’m no scientist…but saying that recreating an idea proves that the same thing happened way back when doesn’t seem quite right.

The Council is STUPID

April 29

Here are some things that I would enjoy more than I did walking for an hour and a half down Russel Road in search of the entrance to Beeliar Regional Park today, which, according to the heavenly Cockburn City Council, is meant to be open to the public and their leashed four-legged companions.

1) …actually, forget it. I can’t be bothered writing out what would otherwise be a very lengthy list. Let’s just say EVERYTHING. I would enjoy everything more than that.

Oh yeah…and then I had to walk all the way back, too >.<.

The White Planet

April 11

HHAries and I just watched The White Planet. This is such a stunning documentary, I can’t even begin to describe it. All I can say is watch it for yourself. It’s amazing.

About Energy

February 23

HHRay and I have vastly different views on creationism, spirituality, and religious beliefs. He’s all about science – if it isn’t proven, it’s not real, Christianity is idiotic and hypocritical, etc. And that’s fair enough.

I’m more about acceptance – you believe what you want to believe and I’ll believe what I want to believe. Don’t insult my beliefs and I’ll grant you the same respect.

A couple of weeks ago we were sitting by the pool and I explained to him what exactly my beliefs are – that I think we all turn into energy when we die, that all living things become interconnected. I explained to him that energy is everywhere – that all living things are are masses of energy, cells are energy, atoms are energy, etc. And energy can’t be created, nor destroyed, only converted.

“But that’s not a religion!” he said. “Ask any scientist what happens when we die and he’ll say the exact same thing.”

In a way he’s right, but I think there’s more to it than that. This is why I believe that religion and science do not have to be polar opposites, and just because a person has more spiritual beliefs and more faith than the other does not mean that that person cannot see from a scientific point of view as well. I believe that yes, there are many different types of energy – heat energy, solar energy, kinetic energy, etc. In fact, it is believed that there are only two types of energies – kinetic energy and potential energy. In the end, it’s all the same thing. I believe that this energy can be manipulated by the mind, that we’re manipulating it unconsciously every single day.

I guess that is the difference between mine and HHRay’s beliefs – he believes in physical manipulation of energy, such as boiling a pot of water and watching it turn to steam, observing a shark propel itself through the water, and other such displays. I believe that energy in itself is alive – after all, it is what makes up every single one of us. I believe that in essence, there is no boundary between me and the person next to me, or between my energy and the energy of the cat that’s dozing on a windowsill on the other side of the world. Therefore, because we are all one big entity of energy, we can manipulate it and everything around us much like we can flex a muscle at will.

John Gets a Haircut

February 18

My botanist adventures will start with John, my orange Calandiva flower. To put it simply, he’s dying. I don’t know why. So I decided that the time has come to cut off the many dead stems and leaves and flowers to lessen the stress on the plant. I wish I could post a before and after photo, but I’m afraid the before was lost a long time ago, so here’s the After:

Yes, yes, I know, he doesn’t look too great now. In the box are all the bits which I removed. I just hope that his self esteem wasn’t too damaged by the haircut.

Whale Slaughter

February 11

How can people do this? This Japanese whaling ship slaughtered two Minke whales – a mother and her baby – in the name of what they call “science”. It’s disgusting and I cannot believe that this is still going on. In the photo, the mother and her calf are being dragged up onto Nisshin Maru, the whaling ship whose crew murdered them. How do these people sleep at night?
